Finalised Building Concept

I was sincerely unhappy with the building I ended 3.1 with, I felt it was clunky and too tied down in strategies and concepts rather than anything concrete and directly applicable. I quickly started brainstorming a new proposal, while still maintaining the intentions I set out with intially

Preliminary Ideas

I started by going straight back to the suer experience, trying to create something more impactful. Here you see sketches where I consider a huge glass wrap around a tower, and start thinking about this would interact with Stretford Public Hall and the impact this would have on the user. I also start experimenting with how I can use the form of Stretford Public Hall to facilitate improved design, such as concealing a lift shaft between the two towers.

Developed Further

I started Developing this lift shaft idea further and thinking through what design opportunities it could have, such as an expansive atrium, using the existing wall of the hall. I quickly start sketching out plans to see how the programme of my building could be adapted to suit this. Here is where the idea of a greenhouse wrapping the entire form of the building came to fruition and the idea of diffusing materiality from the Hall.

Finalising concept

This became a much more firm idea and I start developing the facade and building concept of offsetting two volumes to create a building which should be both interesting and dramatic while also easily employing environmental solutions such as using solar heat gain to facilitate more efficient ventilation and create an insulating double skin.

Testing Feasibility

Knowing that when developing an outlandish form the first thing which should be resolved before getting carried away is the structure I go straight into trying to develop and solidify this. I also start developing ideas on how the structure can convey design intention, i.e create the illusion of an actual leaning form while developing an approach which incises the user.
